A Cat House In My Backyard!

Posted August 18, 2009 @ 11:36AM

Many people are complaining about the cat population in our city. Wow, who knew there would be so many. If you ever wake up in the middle of the night and go outside you will see many strays roaming the streets. One night I decided to experiment with food. It was about 2:30 in the morning and I grabbed a bag of cat food, (it really belonged to my cat Tiger Lily), and I tossed a couple of handfuls on the sidewalk in front of my home. It only took a few minutes for a three kittens to emerge and start chowing down. Three turned into 8, then 13, then 21. All I assume without a home.

As I said I have a beautiful cat that stays in doors, and since I love my cat it pains me to see strays yet alone kittens on the streets through rain and thunderstorms, huddling on people's porches to find some shelter from the elements. Winter time is much worse. I support many charities, some of which I have called to alert them of the problem in my neighbourhood. Many of the places I called could not take them - they were full. Just the other day, I had to take seven kittens to the human society because they were abandoned.

There is a real problem in this city that must be addressed. I believe it is on the owner's to make sure their pets do not contribute to this problem, I also believe that the city needs to step in and help solve this problem by providing more funding for some of these not-for-profit shelters that have no kill policies. I understand that we can't save them all, but I saved seven, and I am just one person.

Help out the Humane Society or the JazzPurr Society if you can by donating so they can save our beloved animals. If you would like to comment on this blog please do so or send me an email lisa@bizxmagazine.com.
