FREE REGISTRATION

for Canspell 2012, thanks to the generous support from the

St. Clair College Alumni Association.

CANSPELL SCHOOL REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED

TO FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11TH, 2011.

WINDSOR, ON - It’s not too late! Registration for The Windsor Star Canspell Spelling Bee program has been extended to Friday, November 11th, 2011. Schools can visit www.canspell.com and register immediately online, or by mail with the downloadable registration form.

Postmedia Canspell is open to children across the country in grades 4-8. Students have fun learning new words and competing at school spelling bees. Last year approximately 250,000 students took part in the educational initiative in 21 cities across Canada.

Canspell makes it easy for students and teachers to get started. Schools receive the following materials:

For students

· A Get Cracking® Speller Kit and Study Guide for each student, containing this year’s study material, word games, tips and more, courtesy of Egg Farmers of Canada

· Participation certificates for each student

· Study material for school spelling bee champions

For teachers

· A comprehensive Teacher Kit with bee instructions and word lists

· Downloadable classroom activities and games

Regional bees will be held in each of the 21 communities in February and March, 2012 –The Windsor Star Regional Spelling Bee will take place on Sunday, February 26th, 2011 at St. Clair Centre for the Arts. The winners of each regional bee will receive a $5000 Canspell Education Award, courtesy of Egg Farmers of Canada.

The 21 regional winners will meet in Toronto at the end of March to compete at the 8th annual Postmedia Canspell National Spelling Bee Final, where the prize pool is $15,000. In addition, the top three spellers will be sent to Washington, D.C. to compete internationally at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in June.

CBC is the exclusive broadcaster of the 2012 Canspell National Spelling Bee and will lend radio and television support to help celebrate Canada's super-spellers. The nation’s top spellers will also be the focus of a special broadcast on CBC Television in April, 2012.
